Deal with an alert

Glovebox raises an alert when something needs you rather than waiting. Each one has something you can do about it.

This guide answers

  • What is this alert?
  • How do I clear an alert?
  • Why does an alert keep coming back?
  • Why is my staff car raising theft alerts?
  • Why do I never get a power cut alert?

Bookings → Alerts.

Glovebox raises an alert when something needs a decision rather than a retry: a payment that has gone unpaid too long, a repositioning suggestion nobody has acted on, a self-collection that got the keys but never recorded an odometer reading, a vehicle failing a compliance check.

Every alert has an action

Alerts are not a log. Each one links to the thing it is about, and dealing with that thing clears it — accepting or dismissing a repositioning suggestion, completing the self-collection, settling the payment.

GPS alerts

If you use GPS tracking, Fleet tracking raises its own alerts from what the trackers report. Each is tuned to rental risk rather than generic telematics, and two of them depend on a switch you set.

  • Overdue. The vehicle should be back and is not, with whether it is heading towards you or away. After 48 hours an overdue booking is treated as unclosed paperwork rather than a late car and stops alerting; close the booking.
  • Unauthorised movement. The vehicle is moving with no hire against it and no transfer, service or maintenance job explaining it. One journey raises one alert: it stays open between stops and closes once the vehicle has been still for half an hour. Staff, courtesy and shuttle cars will trip this every day unless you tell Glovebox they are expected to move. Open the vehicle, and under Status & access turn on Expected to move without a booking. Nothing else about that vehicle changes.
  • Power cut. The tracker lost external power, which on a hire is the theft signal. It only fires for a tracker you have marked as wired to constant 12V. On a tracker wired to the ignition, losing power just means the engine is off, so the alert stays silent until you confirm the wiring. Settings › Tracking lists each tracker with Constant power or Confirm wiring; click it and choose Constant 12V, power cut alerts on once the unit is on a permanent feed. If you are not sure, leave it, which keeps the alert off.
  • Offline, overspeed and low battery. Gone quiet mid-hire with the last known position, sustained speeding rather than a spike, and a flat tracker battery. Low battery needs hardware that reports a voltage; the tracking settings page says if yours does not.

Acknowledge an alert to show a person has seen it; resolve it when it is dealt with. Who did each is recorded against the alert.

If one keeps coming back

It is being re-raised because the underlying situation is still true. Clearing the alert without fixing the cause is a loop; the alert will find you again tomorrow.
